Newsletter 12/1

We hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving holiday and the extra time with your children.  Most of us have much to be thankful for–we just need to take the time to remember that.  Our ‘mini’ feast was yummy.  We made applesauce, pumpkin bread, and corn bread ourselves and added cranberry sauce, popcorn with maple syrup, and a beverage to our menu.

Winter might really be here–at least most days.  Be sure your child has a coat, hat, mittens, and boots to wear.  Unless the temperature is really cold, the boys and girls go outside every day after lunch.  Shoes are also needed because wearing just socks in our room is not safe and boots are too hot to wear all day and they often make the carpet wet.  Everyone that needed mittens was given a pair last week, thanks to the MSU Varsity Club.

The book order that came home last week is due tomorrow.  Books make great ifts and stocking stuffers.  They are reasonably priced so it’s a good time to take advantage of the choices.

The November Book-It reading calendar is due now.  We expect that all of you have been encouraging and monitoring your child’s reading.  Enjoying reading and being competent at it will help ensure your child’s success in school.  If the original calendar has been misplaced, a note verifying that your child has been involved in reading activities for 300 minutes may be substituted.  Please sign the calendar or note and material (books, magazine, etc.) read should be recorded.  A December calendar (hard to believe!) is in the folder.

In math we will begin exploring (reviewing) the concept of multiplication using a variety of materials.  At this point we will be discovering different  strategies to show how multiplication works and connects to addition.  The focus willl be to build a solid foundation, understanding of the concept–memorization of the facts will begin in the near future.  A 3rd grade expectation is that all the basic facts are committed to memory.

Thursday, Mr. Myerly, the “Worm Man,” is visiting our room to share information about earthworms and how we can have our own “worm compost.”  It’s amazing how much they can eat to help us recycle paper and food scraps.

Work Folders come home today.  Return ASAP.  Thanks!
